Church Choir
Orthodox worship is greatly enhanced by the polyphonic singing of the Church choir. Sung in four parts or voices - Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass. We Glorify God by raising our voices in song.
King David the author of the Church’s hymnbook the Psalms, where much of our liturgical praise comes from, wrote;
“Sing Praises to our Lord, Sing Praises,
Sing Praises to our King, Sing Praises” Prokimenon Tone 3 (Psalm 46/47)
The choir is important in leading worship. The Orthodox Church does not know of a “low” service which we see in other western Christian denominations where services are read. Everything is sung, both the priest and the faithful keep true to King David’s call. Even if the service is cantored by a lone reader, it is sung based on our liturgical melodies. For us, the Kyivan chant.
We are blessed with a good choir that lifts our hearts to the heights of prayer on every Sunday and feast day. We are also blessed to have our choir share the joy of the Holy Mysteries, be it a wedding or when they mourn by leading the worship in our Orthodox Funerals.
Our choir is a dedicated group. Singing is joyful but singing in a choir is hard work. There are so many movable parts, week to week, service to service, feast day to feast day, and liturgical season to liturgical season.
Our group is made up of a variety of our faithful. It is always a joy when I come in to church on a Sunday and start the service of preparation (Proskomedia) and I can hear through the back door our choir practising in the church hall.
I thank God that His people dedicate their time to Glorify Him.
